Recording the Calling It Off Audiobook + OKC Event!

May 14, 2025

Despite the gorgeous Colorado weather, I've spent the better part of the last two weeks in Boulder's Coupe Studios with the incredible team from MakeSound.

Let me tell you, recording the audiobook for Calling It Off has been equal parts pleasurable and painstaking.

It’s exciting to push myself and try my hand at something so completely outside my wheelhouse, and I am genuinely blown away at how stellar it sounds. But even more than that, I’m pumped you will finally be able to hear my story in my voice. I hope it feels like a great chat with a close friend.

That being said, it has been weeks of hard work with some pretty unique challenges.

Not only do parts of the story feel newly raw and emotional once again, but on the first day of recording, the overly perfectionistic and hyper-critical parts of me tried to take over. They kept nagging my brain as I read aloud, saying I should have written this sentence better, adjusted the sequence of those words, or even removed paragraphs entirely.

They also kept analyzing the voice playing back in my headphones, saying it was too high or not energetic enough, or somehow too enunciated.

The self-doubt took me out of my flow entirely.

But then something incredible happened. The gracious and loving part of me spoke up on my behalf. She reminded me how much the words on the page still hit my heart to the core and taught me something new, even though I’m the one who wrote them in the first place.

If they still impact me, she said, then hopefully they can speak to others who need to hear them too.

So with a little help from my producer, I shook off the shackles of perfectionism once again, dove back into self-trust, and embodied my most grounded and authentic voice yet.

I’m still nervous for the world, or at least my small corner of it, to hear this imperfect version of me and my saga, but I’m hoping that by taking a vulnerable leap, it will inspire others to do the same.

In short, I’m showing up as me. I hope it resonates.

And just in case an upcoming audiobook wasn’t enough of a fun update, I’ve got another surprise for my folks in the 405.

This is a proper dream-come-true, and I am honored to announce an event at the place where I first fell in love with books, Full Circle Bookstore
